At Burning Man
Coma Camp
In 2019, the Neurocritical Care Society launched their Curing Coma Campaign with the bold challenge of finally understanding the mechanisms of coma and hopefully discovering ways to reverse it. Dr. DaiWai Olson, one of the Campaign’s organizers, suggested they would need to go beyond the bounds of a small circle of scientists, rather they would need to include a larger community and think outside the box. With those words as guidance, there is no place on earth that fits the label of community and creativity better than Burning Man. Burning Man has been called many things, but in reality, it’s whatever you want it to be. For many, it’s the ultimate gathering of highly creative people who build a vibrant city and community for one week in the year.
There are many members of the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS) that fit that description. And there are quite a few Burners already lurking within that Society. If you have always wanted to go and just need to get over that last little bit of anxiety (e.g. the ticket says you accept the risk of dying there), then perhaps we can help by forming Coma Camp where we fight the elements and enjoy the stimulation together.
NCS and Burning Man are similar in that they are focused on exploration, discovery, and on pushing the boundaries in their respective disciplines. Unknown to many are the high-level lectures given at Burning Man each year. There are several camps focused on neuroscience with a range of lectures from consciousness to EEG to psychedelics and a whimsical session called “Ask a Drunken Neuroscientist”, all given by neuroscientists, neurosurgeons, neurologists and others.
In 2021 and 2022, there was a one-man Coma Camp at Burning Man…to spread the word about Curing Coma. The “work” paid off as we now have a host camp, some like-minded neuroscientists, and a venue in which to discuss coma. In 2023, Campus Callosum hosted the former 1-man Coma Camp and we were able to produce a well attended talk called Coma and Consciousness.

Again this year, Coma Camp will be part of Campus Callosum.
